Atlanta, GA – October 19, 2026 – Homeowners in Atlanta’s historic districts and HOA-regulated communities may need approval before installing a door awning. Softek Awnings has installed door awnings across Atlanta for nearly 30 years and can create a custom rendering from a photo of a home’s exterior, then guide homeowners through any required approvals.
The permit question is usually the easy part. In most parts of the region, a front door awning doesn’t require a permit as long as it stays within basic limits. Approval is separate, and that is where historic districts and homeowners associations come in.
The City of Atlanta requires a Certificate of Appropriateness for property in a historic or landmark district, issued by the Urban Design Commission or Office of Design staff. Homeowners can check whether a property carries that designation through the Department of City Planning’s GIS website. Homes in those districts, and in HOA-regulated communities, may face additional requirements, including limits on size and color.

Size affects how well the awning works, not just whether it is approved. A 42-inch width suits a standard door, while 48 to 54 inches suits larger doors. Softek typically installs a 3- to 4-foot projection. A longer projection provides more shade and weather protection, but it requires a stronger frame and a higher mounting point, and Softek accounts for wind load and material width in the design.
The rendering is created before fabrication, so a homeowner can see how the awning will sit against their facade and submit it for review when a board is involved.
Door awning installation in the Atlanta area typically costs $1,300 to $1,800, depending on materials, style, and size.
Once installed, the awning shields the door from rain, helping prevent weather-related wear and reducing puddles in the entryway. It also shields the entrance from UV, helping the door hold its color over time. It can also add privacy by partially blocking the view of the door.
Softek’s door awnings use water-resistant, UV-protected fabrics and come in styles from classic to minimalist. Fabric work uses Sunbrella® materials. Qualifying Sunbrella® Shade and Marine fabrics carry a 10-year limited warranty against the fabric becoming unserviceable due to loss of color or strength under normal use and exposure, subject to the manufacturer’s terms.
